This radio came in after the old man tried to attach a much larger fan to the rear of the radio to help it cool quicker. The little SMD transistor employed in these radios is really not up to handling anything other than the fan that the radio comes with. Even then, if the fan is obstructed, the transistor can pop.
The radio was opened and the area on the circuit board was identified, where the SMD transistor was located.
The transistor was then removed using a hot air gun and capstan tape.
As you can see, these little SMD transistors are tiny.
The transistor was replaced by a new one and the fan was working again, just as if it were new.
