According to the BolexCollector.com, the SM8 was a magnetic sound projector capable of silent or sound playback of Super 8 film, and allowed audio recording onto magnetic striped Super 8 film. The SM8 was later modified (approximately in 1970) to include a variable level erase head and different lamp. An accessory sound mixing console and external 6-8W/5 Ohm speaker was available separately, for both models.
The unit came in with the user saying "It turns the reels but it doesn't project." So, it was put on the bench and taken apart. A short inspection of the base functionality was done:
- Plug into a current limited power supply.
- Turn the unit on and observe the current flow. All seemd good.
- Turn the knob to start projection. There was no projection light
The projector was then carefully cleaned and upon doing so, it became clear that a piece of old film had become trapped in the feeder.
This was carefully removed.
As the owner wanted to enjoy his old family Super 8 films for some time to come, a new 12v/100W Halogen bulb and built in dichroic reflector was procured and installed.
A look inside the left hand side panel reveled that the three drive belts and become brittle and broken.
So new belts were procured and fitted. How that is done can be read on here. Finally, the bearings were oiled and the felt pads cleaned.
The memories I have as a child, watching old 8mm movies from the past, were absolutely priceless. Glad that this family can enjoy their memories for time to come.
