Sony ICF-6800W World Receiver

This receiver is with out doubt world class with regard to reception and value for money. If you would like to know more details, read the fastastic report by ShortwaveRadio.ch

The owner absolutely loves his set and wanted the display light behind the main frequency dial replaced after it had blown. Normally a 5 min. job, right? Wrong!

After opening the case, it was clear that this was going to be a big job, as the dial lamp is not obviously visible after opening back and front of the case.

Obviously, the lamp must be built into the circular shaped dial assembly at the bottom of the main radio. This meant, that the whole receiver main chasis had to come out of the middle case.

Once removed, the main chasis had to be separated further. The main board of the receiver had to be detached from the scale drum. Once removed, the lamp could finally be accessed.

Unfortunately, someone had been in the radio before me and replaced the lamp already.

The wires had been crudely taped and the new bulb set it place with hot glue and the holder was broken. So the holder was unscrewed and taken to the bench for a close up inspection.

The old bulb and hot glue was removed using dental tools and a new bulb was put in place with sticky tape, for ease of repair next time around.

After this the radio chasis was re-assembled. On inspection, it was noticed that someone had been in the pre-selector board. Whatever they had done, they had forgotten to re-solder the shielding of the metal case upon their exit.

So the case was also soldered back in place and the radio was tested on all bands.

A big job for little gain, but the user told me they enjoy the glow of the radio at night and I totally understand it. That's nostalgia and I know how that feels. I hope he enjoys the radio for years to come.
